FoodFun Lifeskills Instructional Software (FoodFun LIS) is a start-up organization whose vision is to create the finest education/entertainment software for non-reading individuals with developmental disabilities. The software product was developed by a specialist in special education, and has been tailored to the needs of this client segment. The software will encourage student use of it frequently and teach certain life skills. FoodFun LIS is an Illinois L.L.C. Sue Altamirankow Ph.D. is the founder and owner. The company will be located in Chicago.

The Market

FoodFun identified four distinct markets that are likely to be interested in the product. These segments are the likely consumers for the software. The segments are as follows:

  • Centers for Independent LivingThese centers were created to assist individuals with development disabilities in living independently. The four main life skills that individuals need to live independently are the core of the curriculum.
  • School Districts All states must provide education for students with special learning needs until the age 21. FoodFun’s software will interest students who are in school districts. They provide essential life skills and are often the educational providers for the student until they turn 18.
  • Proactive Parents– Parents who are taking an active role in the education of their children will be looking for aids that they can use at home to help with their child’s learning progress.
  • Agencies Many states have agencies that act as brokers in order to connect individuals with service providers. They are usually created as a result or a payout from a lawsuit, including a class-action.

Parents should only purchase one copy, but other segments may purchase multiple copies/site licences. They will likely purchase upgrades to the next version.



Grocery shopping and socialization/leisure are two of the main lifeskills which individuals with developmental disabilities are taught. FoodFun has developed a unique software product that is an effective teaching aid for these important skills. Groce Shopping is the first component of this software. This can be described as a digital recipe book. Each recipe is represented as a photo. Once the student selects the image they wish, they are presented with a list of photos that include the ingredients and utensils necessary to make the dish. The student can print out the photos and bring them to the grocery shop, where they can shop independently.

The second component is the socialization/leisure time module that provides the user with a choice of many different social events/parties for which they can prepare food. This module allows students plan parties (and we all love to plan parties), and includes music that is linked to each social event. Many people with disabilities have the ability to feel joy and happiness when they click on social events and hear the music.

Competitive Edge

There are many companies that sell educational products to this segment. FoodFun LIS will increase their competitive advantage by incorporating entertainment in their software product. This is a way to create interest and joy while using their software. The program’s effectiveness will be increased by creating interest and joy. FoodFun believes students are more likely than ever to enjoy using the product if they don’t feel forced to.

FoodFun is Dr. Sue Altamirankow’s creation. Sue is a special education teacher with a Masters Degree and Ph.D. Her published thesis, ‘#8220: Implications in Lifeskill Training of Individuals with Autism’ was a landmark paper that thoroughly examined all aspects lifeskills. This was the foundation for her plan to start a company that makes software. She realized she could make a study guide that was fun and effective. It would be enjoyable because students would love using it. It would also be useful because it taught valuable life skills.
