Opportunity

Problem

Society has limited resources for the less fortunate or homeless youth population. Eugene, as all other cities, is home to a number of homeless teenage migrants who fled their families. They are here for a few months of the year and then they hitch down to California during the winter for warmer weather. These are young adults that don’t understand how to become part of society. These people can’t support themselves and have children.

Solution

We provide career and education assistance to Lane County’s at-risk youth. We aim to make this experience worthwhile for our clients. We do this through a series of curricula funded by the Lane Workforce Partnership, Oregon Youth Conservation Corps, Oregon Department of Human Resources, and the local school districts.

Our most recent program is a culinary art program. It teaches students how to prepare food safely and properly and allows them to then make lunches for other students at the Chambers School. After completing the 9 week curriculum, students are assigned to a local restaurant for a 60 hour practical training. This allows them to continue their learning. The current availability of the culinary arts program for students is five per 9-week school terms, or approximately 25 students per calendar year. Students who are enrolled in the program have been chosen due to their enthusiasm for the culinary field and their exceptional attendance.

Market

Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce reports that Eugene’s small and medium-sized entrepreneurs are the economic heart of Eugene. Most of Eugene’s businesses employ fewer than 20 workers. Eugene’s small businesses are active, thriving, and well supported. They include financial service companies, management consultancies, specialty retail shops, and ethnic groceries. There are over 10,000 businesses within Eugene, including sole proprietorships or limited partnerships. This new growth has brought new businesses to Eugene/Springfield and expanded opportunities for caterers who can meet these needs.

Catering For Kids anticipates that Eugene/Springfield businesses have unmet demand for catered lunch meetings and other events. Business to business catering is not the same as that of other restaurants and food-related businesses. Businesses continue to have lunch meetings and employees who wish to purchase their lunches year round. We conducted some market research in order to gain an understanding of the market size. We sent an email survey to 144 Lane County nonprofits asking for information about their future and current demand for catering services. Also, we asked them if they were interested in patronizing a non-profit catering business. Many responses were similar to the ones below.

“I think this is a great idea. It could be a resource for the entire community. Springfield/Eugene Habitat for Humanity does not host many lunchtime meetings, however there is a group of about 13 or 14 Executive Directors of Habitat affiliates that meet here about every three months that might use your service.” – Susan Brown, Volunteer Coordinator, Eugene/Springfield Habitat for Humanity

If we have an event that needs catering, we’ll call your program first. We use nonprofit organizations first when we need services.

Our catering requirements are not great, only a few times per calendar year. You can contact me to discuss the program. You can contact me to discuss the program. My son is a pupil at Chambers School.

We do require a venue that can accommodate 50-100 people for our General Membership Meetings. I’m not involved with arranging the meetings but do know that our organization is in need of a place to meet where food and beer can be served. Maybe Dave will speak with you. I believe the first meeting takes place in October.

Concurrence

A number of other caterers offer boxed lunches for business clients. Many of these caterers do not offer boxed lunches for business clients. Catering For Kids focuses on developing strong relationships and partnerships with its nonprofit clients.

Catering For Kids believes this unique position will allow us to be the premier caterer for Lane County non-profits.

Why Us?

Catering For Kids is dedicated to providing at-risk youth with an opportunity to gain work experience and transferable skills by providing our customers with healthy, homemade foods and excellent service at reasonable prices. Catering For Kids employees will be Chambers School and Career Center students who are interested in working in the restaurant and food service industry. Participation in this program will enable students to make the transition from school and work, as well as help them develop entrepreneurial skills that can be applied to any future job.

Expectations

Forecast

The following benchmark chart indicates our key financial indicators for the first three years. We expect a slow, steady increase in our services’ demand and an associated rise in operating expenses. Catering For Kids in the first year will focus on catering for its internal market. As year two approaches, Catering For Kids will start to serve the external market.

Financial Highlights by Year

Financing Required

One of our revenue lines is grant funding, $15,000 annually. We need to anticipate receiving $2,000 in monthly donations, as well as revenue from lunches and event catering fees.
