Helping Hand, an untaxed food bank for the whole of Johnson County (Washington), is tax exempt. Helping Hand’s mission is to end hunger in Johnson County. We solicit, collect, grow, and package food for distribution through a network service agencies and programs that target our target population. Our services include food box programs, emergency food programs, and a youth farm that provides opportunities for self-sufficiency activities for “at risk” youth. Helping Hand receives support through the county as well corporate sponsorship.

Around 20% Johnson County residents are eligible to receive Helping Hand. Our client base is low-income people, mainly families, who need emergency help to put food on the table. Nearly half of the clients served by the program were children. Helping Hand has a warehouse where we store donated and rescued food. The program actively solicits food for distribution from local food growers as well as wholesalers, retailers, and processors. Helping Hand also collects food donations for distribution to service programs.

According to estimates, Helping Hand’s services will be more needed by children over the next five decades. Johnson County is expanding and many new families are moving into the county to find work. Many programs are available to assist these new families. Because we are able to respond quickly with one of the most essential resources these families require, Helping Hand is a valuable resource. Food!

Our services improves the ability of families to care for children and achieve goals of self-sufficiency. Helping Hand’s services can be a cost-effective investment, compared with the costs of neglecting the issue of hunger in the area and the effects it has upon a variety of criminal and health issues.

1.1 Mission

Helping Hands exists to relieve hunger in Johnson County. They solicit, collect and grow food and distribute it through a network. Our services include food box programs, emergency shelters, congregate meal sites, residential treatment services, and children’s programs.

1.2 Objectives

This new initiative is intended to establish a foodbank that will provide assistance for all of Johnson County, Washington. These are our objectives:

  • Establish a network of donors from local growers and retailers.

  • Establish a youth farm where « at-risk » youth can be employed.

  • In the first year, collect over 4 million pounds of food. Each year, increase the amount of food collected by 20%.

  • Distribute the food effectively to low-income families who make up more than 20% of Johnson County.

  • Acquire $200,000 of start-up funding through corporate, private charities and government financial support.
  • Spend an additional $100,000 on fundraising.
