Emergency Shelters Business Plan

Transitional Housing of Pittsburgh (a not-for-profit social services agency) is a new start-up that serves the greater Pittsburgh area. The organization was founded by Amy Rand who has both the practical experience and the education to lead the organization. Amy is currently working on assembling a strong Board of Trustees which will be invaluable for the organization.

Services

Transitional Housing of Pittsburgh is an organization that provides transitional housing and life skill training for women. It offers assistance to women, frequently homeless, as they move from dependent, often abusive relationships into independent, self-sufficient lifestyles. It helps clients with child reunification. This is important since 80% clients have children, but no custody.

This is the only woman-only facility in the city and also the only one offering long-term, transitional housing. Transitional Housing is able to offer housing for up two years, while all other shelters offer just 30 days of housing. To assist clients, there is a counselor for chemical dependency and AIDS, as well as a counselor for family reunification.

Clients are provided with eight-step programs that teach them life skills. This collaborative approach to empowerment will help clients achieve self-sufficiency. The steps include personal and vocational development, substance abuse counseling, interpersonal skill building, community involvement, leisure activities, independent living skills, and individual development.

The Market

Transitional Housing has identified two distinct customers segments based on their age. This distinction is necessary due to the large percentage of clients who have children. Clients in this younger market segment also tend to have fewer children. The 30-and-over age group is growing at 8%, while the age group below 30 is growing at 9.9% per year. The potential clients for both of these groups is 165.454 and 128.745 respectively. The overwhelming majority of clients come from lower socio-economic population groups. These clients can be difficult for you to communicate with but Transitional Housing would provide some tremendous benefits.

Management

Amy Rand, the Executive Director, is the driving force behind the company. Amy has a B.S. Amy holds a B.S. in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University, and a Master’s in Non-Profit Management at the University of Pittsburgh. Additionally, she has several years of social service project management. Amy created a proactive empowerment programme while working as the program manger for Pennsylvania&#8217’s largest domestic abuse relief agency. This program has since become the foundation of Transitional Housing&#8217’s collaborative approach towards empowerment. Amy has built a vast network of professional relationships and personal connections with community leaders throughout her tenure as program managers. This will not only help raise the profile of Transitional Housing, but also have a major impact on fundraising activities.
