Custom Quilt Artist Business Plan

Custom Quilt Artist Business Plan

Sew Distinct is a sole proprietorship, owned by Sally Stitch. I sell custom, high-quality quilts to discerning customers. I handle the customer response, design and piecing. The hand-quilted pieces are hand-quilted by two local hand-quilters, each with approximately 20 years of experience. I have also negotiated per-piece pricing. Sew Distinct quilts can be made in the home of the owner and shipped directly to customers in northwest MyState. I have many years of experience as an expert quilter. My strength lies in the ability to transform even the most vague ideas and descriptions of a customer into beautiful, meaningful quilt designs that both recipient and giver will appreciate.

Sew Distinct creates custom, handmade, snuggly, quilt art for customers who value originality and don’t possess the skills or time required to make such pieces. My customers get the pleasure of working with me in the design phase. This allows them to have input and not need to invest their time or labor. The result is a personalized, usable, beautiful quilt which will be appreciated for generations to come.

For three years, I have been making commission quilts as a hobby and can’t keep up to the demand from customers while working part-time. Starting I will open Sew Distinct as a full-time venture operated out of my home. My goals are for Sew Distinct to pay me and my freelance hand-quilters an adequate wage for the work they love. Also, to repay the start-up loan in the first two years.

By requiring payment at the time I commission, I minimize financial risk. This means that the customer can work as long as they like on a design. However, once we have agreed on a design, I require payment in full before I begin creating the quilt. This arrangement has always worked well for both of us.

The most valuable part of quilts is the labor that goes into designing and creating them. This is more than the materials (fabrics, threads, etc.). These are the materials of which they are made. My start-up expenses are therefore quite small (under $5,000.)

  • Inventory of $1,000 (a basic fabric library).
  • $1000 for a second sewing machine
  • $1,600 cash reserve
  • $350 for website development
  • $600 on various supplies, legal expenses, etc.

I will invest $2,500 in the startup of the business and another $2,050 to buy initial stock of fabric and equipment. Based on my current prices for quilts and the time it takes to complete each one, sales are expected to reach $45,700 in the first 12 months. In the third week, I expect to start breaking even.

1.1 Mission

At Sew Distinct, I know that my customers value originality and high-quality work as much as they value their time. I will use a very small amount of my customers time to gather the necessary information for me to design a quilt. This can be used to proudly give as a gift, keep it as an heirloom or displayed as artwork in your home or office.

Success Keys 1.2

Sew Distinct is an organization that focuses on success.

  1. My reputation as an exceptional firm has been solidified. Nationally, I am the only person who can create truly customized quilts that are not based on standard geometric patterns.
  2. By emphasizing my customers’ unique needs, I am able to cater to their customization needs. It puts them, and their personality, at center of the product.
  3. These finished custom quilts can be made in a matter of weeks (locally or online) for a premium that enhances the quality and prestige.
  4. To transform bulk, cheap materials into high-end art pieces that can fetch high prices, we must maintain our originality of design.

1.3 Objectives

  • At a cost that covers owner’s labor, create 6 unique, custom quilts per calendar month.
  • For word-of-mouth advertising success, make contact with local artisan groups and my customer base.
  • To provide additional information and initiate non-local sales, create a website.
  • Two years to pay off your initial investment and earn 10% interest.
